I am sorry for all these questions but i am trying to start out on the right foot. My new F2 loses any prior settings when shut off. I shut it off to save battery and my ears when moving short distances as it is mounted on the ATV.
Is this normal?

yep, its normal. But you might not be saving any battery if your only going a short distance. Your probably wasting battery, it takes alot more power to "power up" a detector than it uses at idle for a long time. A common light bulb for example...........it takes more power to power it up than it uses in a a few hours of staying on. And thats just a tiny little filament, imagine what your detector uses.

FYI.......I use the hell outa my F2, the only thing I change on the settings when I turn it on is I hit discriminate twice to get rid of iron and foil. Most of the places I detect are full of trash or I wouldnt even do that. Using discrimination of any sort makes you lose small items of value like ear rings, but it can make you lose a few things that arent discriminated due to "masking" The F2 has found many items for me that wee under a large nail that I had discriminated out though. It's not as bad as my other detectors in that respect. It has great target separation and speed with the 8" coil.

If you want to save your ears, use headphones and leave them plugged in while your moving, thats the single best way to save your batteries also. I get around 40 hours on a set of walgreens brand alkalines using headphones.

USING HEADPHONES
Using headphones (not supplied) improves
battery life, and prevents the sounds from
annoying bystanders.
It also allows you to hear subtle changes in the
sound more clearly, particularly if searching in a
noisy location. For safety reasons, do not use
headphones near traffic or where other
dangers are present. This device is to be used
with interconnecting cables/headphone
cables shorter than three meters.

shorter than 3 meters!!!???  WTF? who has 9 foot headphone cables? lol  Oh yeah, when all else fails.........read the manual  Grin

yep, its true, I did a science project on it in school, I cant remember the statistics, but powering up a light bulb (first second) uses ALOT more power than the bulb uses to stay lit for a long time. So if your turning lights off and on constantly to save power........leaving them on might save more power until a time when people arent in and out of the room.

The  Fisher F2 has an automatic reset built in when you shut down.  You need to reset when you restart.  This is an advantage to you to help recover more treasure that you might have overlooked.  It`s still a SUPER DETECTOR.............LakeportPirate
