Hello,

I live in Florida and there are allot of ghost towns through the state. I was wondering if anyone has had any luck or experience with hunting ghost towns?

Thanks...

lok-art;

Some ghost towns are good... if you can, find out some history. Some towns have been abandoned because of a hazard, like an old mine that is caving in (just an example.) Make sure you are not infringing on some historic value, ther could be repercussions. otherwise....

GO FOR IT!

Thanks for the great tips. I never thought of the possible dangers. I have done some homework on those close to me and they seem to be safe and open to the public.

lok-art;

A couple things. always worth checking, is a board sidewalk, but do it in a non-destructive manner, and burned building sites.

A board sidewalk can be propped up, for the search... but dont hit a prop, accidently! Funny

Some of the old goldrush ghost towns in lower BC have yielded some good stuff from boardwalks and burned hotels. (Very old burns when the towns were occupied, not so good, for recent carelessness.)

If you get a town site, that was burned out and not re-occupied, it is wide  open, but watch the holes. Of course, dry country ghost towns have less vegetation, but either one:

    WATCH OUT FOR SNAKES!

Fortunately, Most of BC, where I live, is snake free, except for lil garter sakes and they are harmless but can puncture skin! Southern BC has rattlers, with less dangerous venom.... dangerous to small animals and little kids.

Have fun and good luck.

Hello lok-art . I saw some internet websites on Florida Ghost Towns and some go back to the early 1830's. I think if you find an accurate Florida Ghost Town map , grab a decent Metal Detector and a friend so you do not go alone !!! All it takes is a Couple of real good Gold Coin "Finds" and your trip plus the detector will be paid for . I have been to some ghost towns here in the west but not in Florida . Remember some ghost towns are only accessible with a 4wheel drive vehicle . Watch out for Aligators !!!! Good Luck......Eugene

I'm from Michigan. I like ghost towns, saw a few in California. Is there anywhere on the web where I might learn about what ghost towns exist in Florida?

Someone was just discussing ghost towns in Florida within the past few days. What you want to do is hurry and get your 15 posts so you can start a topic with that in the subject line. You will definitely attract some attention then.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Ha! There used to be a program called BossKey that when you press a certain key, a spreadsheet would come up and replace what you were doing.

You are correct. At the rate you are going, you will have your 15 posts in about 9 more minutes. Clock is ticking . . .

Goldigger1950;

Ghost towns, sound like a good idea... I could probably get a pile of photos and permission to reproduce. I should have taken a lot more photos, two years ago, but I barely took 500, and  none of the old buildings we saw.

If I take the pictures, there is no problem with display rights.

BC has a bunch of ghost towns and every one has an interesting history.
