Hello all im new here and quite exited about getting into some metal detecting.
I dont have alot of spare cash atm and was wondering if anyone has any idea what these very cheap chinese Gold Century detectors are like.
The GC-1010 was the model im looking at and cant find much about them.

Welcome aboard from Perth. Where do you live in Australia?

As to the detector, shop around on eBay for a second hand one of better quality. That model is available there at a greatly reduced price.

I have no clue how good those Chinese made detectors are.   Some guys seem to bust on them but I have never heard any say they owned and used one.    I too have never owned or used a Chinese made detector.    They might be every bit as good as comparable made Whites and Garretts.     I don't know.  I do know it is folly to bust on Chinese made electronics because most of our TVs, DVD players and computers are made in China or contain parts made in China.   We all got those like it or not.

I am considering someday of buying one of them, the $59 model, as a backup machine and give it a good work out.    I don't think you can go too far wrong at 60 bucks.

Thanks for the replies fellas. I ended up buying the china one for $100. Not expecting too much though. I plan on trying a little beach detecting this summer so we'll see how it goes there I guess.

GP, I'm near Warburton in Vic. Not to far from Woods Point and Walhalla area.
I just came across this article where the auther seems amazingly pleased with this machine.

I hope its true. Now ive got my hopes up.
BTW whats the go with prospecting permits? Do I need one for basically just messing around with a metal detector?

The laws vary on that from state to state. Here, a fossicking permit is $25.00 for a lifetime license. There are other permits required here for detecting on Crown Land. Check with your local detecting shop. They always know.
