Ok, I am showing how much of a newbie I am, by admitting this but...

I bought an "El Cheapo" metal detector. (Gold Snoop Pro)

I turned it on yesterday to see if it could detect my gold ring, and

Nada. Zip. Not a sound.

I don't have any other gold, but I figured it should beep on other metal too.

So I tried it on coins, chains, keys, and a huge iron vice.

Nothing.

Not a blip.

Tried it on different settings.

Not a blip.

This morning I realised that I had left it on in the back of the car while I was driving, because it made a couple of beeps, and then again a couple blips.

I stopped the car and took it outside, to detect the ground where I had driven past (unpaved road).

But I couldn't get it to make any sound.

 Cry

The coil is 20 cm.

I suppose I got kind of excited about this device after reading about it in a book, and then the testimonial kind of confirmed it for me. (Though I just re-read it, and am starting to wonder about its authenticity)

I guess I need bigger gold to test it on. I'm just surprised that it didn't make any beep on the "All metals" mode.

Yep I agree, and make sure all the contacts are clean and working check to make sure the coil plug is pushed all the way home, it should see very small items not just big stuff, so try it out on a few coins etc, then get back to us,

good luck

Good points. I hadn't thought that it could be the batteries. It takes two 9v, and I checked both the batteries with a Multi metre and they both showed just over 9v each but they are rechargeables so maybe some non recheargeables will give a better result. I did check that the lead was plugged in properly so that doesn't seem to be the problem. Maybe I will open it up and make sure everything looks in place .

It looks like a Garrett Ace, but I never heard of the brand before.  Is it a Chinese knock-off?

It's been rebranded by Jack Lange as a Gold Snoop Pro.

I put some new Energiser batteries into my Gold Snoop Pro.

Tested over my box of screwdrivers and still nothing.

So I opened it up and took a couple photos.

I then screwed the cover back on and reinserted the batteries and tried it again over my box of screwdrivers and Presto!

"Beep...Beep"

It's giving me a signal!

Thank you guys for not letting me quit so early into my treasure hunting!

Well done.  Clapp  loose connection somewhere.
From now on you can say that you can repair Chinese metal detectors. Great
By the way “quit” it’s not a word that exists in the treasure hunter’s vocabulary. No no! No no!
If it’s still on yours you better erase it.
