Go Up Go Down

Hi, I found your site online and was wondering if you  could give a bit of advice. My daughter in college and has always loved treasure hunting….from coins, to arrowheads and geodes.  I would love to buy her a metal detector for her upcoming birthday and have no idea where to start.

She would be using it on land mainly flat here in Georgia, Tennessee and possibly North Carolina.   Is there a good dependable brand you can recommend?  She is a fast learner and I would like to get her one she could use for years.

I would like to get here something that will be the kind she can use beyond the beginning phase as she is pretty good with learning things.

I think she would probably use it several times per month.  I have read that there are headphones and pinpointers to assist.  Do you have suggestions as to what would be the best fit?

I have seen a lot of good reviews on the Tesoro Silver uMax but again, I don’t have a clue as to where to begin in buying a good quality detector.

Thank you very much for your help.

Yeah Goldie is right, there are good detectors for 2000 or 200.

Tesoro Silver uMax would definitely be on my short list if I was looking for a detector to give someone I really cared about.  Not a lot of fancy displays and stuff to mess with, but will last a lifetime (especially since it comes with a life-time warranty if you buy it knew).  It's light weight, built-tough, and reliable.

without knowing how much you want to spend, I would stick with the made in the USA  brands and get the best deal you can on one. Fisher, ( I highly recommend the F2 or F4 on the lower end of the scale) F70 or F75 on the higher end. Teknetics - these are great machines.  Whites - great machines, I just think for the money the first 2 I put in are a  better value. Other USA brands that Im not a fan of but have a good following are Garret and Bounty hunter, cant beat the prices of those bounty hunters, durable and made in the USA, they get a bad rap from serious detectorists that justify their expensive machines purchases but give me a a top of the line BH and a couple hours at a new site of my choice and I'll make them cry like little school girls with envy over my finds lol.

I would suggest to e-mail of call Kellyco and talk to one of their reps.Very helpful crew they have.I'm sure that they can hook you up with a machine that will fit your daughters needs and your budget.
You could also do some of your own research on this forum to maybe narrow down your choices before.
Check into the the suggestion that the members have made, all the suggestion that I have seen here are good sound pick.
In the end you will be the only one that can make the pick.
Good luck......

He's right, and your right about the silver umax, comes with a true lifetime warranty, and very deep, but a big learning curve. She'll be digging trash to no end in sight for awhile. But as a first detector? I guess that would depend on the person your giving it to. She'll either learn how to use that type, or not waste her time and never use it. I think the reason many start with BH is their simplicity for a beginner. The detector gives you a good idea on the screen what your about to dig and you can decide from that to dig or not. With the Tesoro, you just plain dig it no matter what it is until you master the sounds trash and good targets make. My excal is like that and I love it, but I wouldnt recommend it to a beginner, especially a young lady in college. She has other things I'm sure she's more interested in than detecting and until she "gets the treasure bug" she may always have better things to do. But give her a detector she can pick up and go have fun right off the bat with...........she may get the bug  Cool
