ok first off -- you need to understand the power / sensitive issue --- the more power or sensitivy you push the better depth you get NORMALLY* (3/4 sen / power on bounty hunters or about 4-5 bars on a 250 seems to get best depth with little to no falsing)---but there are places and times that this is not so * -- too much power can make your machine OVERLY SENSITIVE OR "UNSTABLE" ---beep -beep -beep lots of false signals ( the machine "sees" the minerals in the soil as a "wall" of metal -- this is very very true if the area has high minerals --like a beach or highly mineralized soil -- if you find thats the case and your machine is the preset ground balance type -- all you can really do is ease up on the power sensitivity level just until the machine smooths out .(hopefully this will work often it does help-- you get a bit less depth but the machine is now usible) by reducing the sen level the machine will no longer pick up the minerals in the ground  but will still hit the metal objects Smiley

being around high power lines can mess with your machine too -- easing up on the sen level can help here too -- since by being less touchy --it doesn't pick up on the static from the power lines . Wink

of course if your machine does have a manual ground balance (like certain bounty hunters do)--use it to dial in the soil conditions so your machine can properly sort out the minerals in the soil from metal  Wink

if you found this helpful please say so. --any other questions feel free to ask.

I think your advise for Bounty Hunters is right on.  I have an older BH that I have been using for a lot of years and have found many, many coins with it.  Every time I cranked up the sensitivity too high I got many false signals.  I finally lear'ned to deal with less penetration but a lot more accuracy with a lower setting.  A lot of people knock the BH's but mine is over 15 years old and still hunting.

This has always been a controversy, ease of use versus adaptability.
My 1236 has audio threshold at maximum sensitivity but usually unable to run full sens.
For interferance caused by overhead lines transformers, etc I am able to get results using frequency shift but still must usually limit sensitivity.
After 30+ years I value a detectors ability to seperate targets  more than brute power. But when relic hunting in clean areas depth is a ++

I have a question about the Ace 250 that maybe you could help me with, im almost a beginner, i have an old c-scope cs 660, a pretty basic machine, which is o.k but only detects coins at about 2" max. I am currently waiting for delivery of an Ace 250 and i was wondering what sort of depths would it be reasonable to expect to find a coin. I mainly detect in parks and on beaches here in England. Ive seen the videos on you tube and the scale on the machine itself goes up to 8".But is this just hype or can you really find coins etc this deep , or would you only find something this deep if it was big? Would appreciate any advice.thanks

Pegasus, the larger 9x12 coil will give you more depth than the stock 6.5x9 and it's worth upgrading.

As far as depth goes, it depends on soil type and conditions. That being said, the deepest coin I have found with the 9x12 was in wet sand. It was a dime around 9 inches deep. It rang as a silver dime, but only in one direction of the sweep. Don't be afraid to reduce your sensitivity on a wet sand beach to reduce falsing. You will still get pretty good depth in the wet sand. If you get a signal in wet sand, pinpoint it, scoop out the area and throw it to the side, then sweep your hole and the pile. If you get the same signal, chances are you got something. Most false signals usually go away after the first scoop, at least that's what I have found in my area.
