Go Up Go Down

Hi All:
I am thinking of returning to this hobby after MANY MANY years of being absent from the sport. When I was young, I would go with my cousin and her family to a metal detecting competetion at Cross Country Camp ground in Denver NC. It was the was some of the greatest memories ever. We only hunted painted pennies, and usually my cousin and I placed with a ribbon or trophy. I would go on the weekends with my cousin and her family to schools, old churches, just about anywhere we could get permission to hunt...  So here I am 30 years later living in California, with 3 children and a husband, thinking that this would be a great family hobby. Now for my questions! Back when we were detecting we didn't have the fancy identifiers that they have now, we listened to the sound of the beep and could usually guess if it was a pop top or a coin etc... needless to say I am overwhelmed with all of the detectors that are out there. Can anyone recommend a detector that would primarily be used in the desert, and grassy type areas? I want to keep it under $200.00 to start and I am not opposed to a used machine. Thanks everyone, and I hope to be posting some exciting finds soon!

Hello and Welcome aboard! I really hope you'll get back into thsi great hobby. It is indeed a fantastic hobby for the whole family.

Well, USD 200.00 is a tight budget especially when excluding used machines. My instant suggestion would have been to look for a pre-owned Tesoro on eBay.

But USD 200.00 will buy you a Garrett Ace 150 oder 250 which is a recommended beginners machine.

Please don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

Best wishes,

Christian

I'd also recommend the Ace 150 or 250. The Ace 250 can be had on EBAy for under $200, thats where I got mine. I love it! The image display is very helpful as well as the multi-tones when you hit a target.
