I have a couple questions here:
First part...
For those of you lucky enough to get a property owner to give you the OK and sign the agreement (I saw the one here on the website) - what would you say is the average % that the property owners have been getting for your findings?

Second part...
Can people please give examples of what % of cold-calling you were successful in your past attempts? For example, in here please state:
1) How many houses/property owners you approached last year (in 2009)?
2) Of those, how many accepted the agreement and you were able to metal detect on their property?
3) Of those you searched.. on average - how successful were your findings?

I was just curious. Thanks!

I have a co-worker that has an empty lot (the original house was torn down) that he owns, and is 1 acre of property. The original house he said was built in the mid-70's, so I'm guessing there could possibly be some coins in there from the 60's? I asked him about it, and he said that I didn't even have to offer to share with him any of my findings! I'll still show him everything I found though.
When it warms up again, I'll take my daughter over there and give it a go.

Even if they say it isn't necessary, it's a nice gesture to give them a small token find--especially if you find something you know they are interested in (like a hotwheels car for someone of the right age or who collects them, or an older common coin for most people)

I dont go into the conversation of asking with offering to give them anything...please let me explain...I introduce myself (First and last name- amature historian) explain what I am asking for ( Would you mind if I used a metal detector ( point or show to person detector) on your property?) Listen for their input....They may still be unsure of your intentions. Explain how you retrieve a target...(NOT DIG A HOLE AND GET TREASURE) Explain how you cut a flap AND replace pointing out the small hole size. If they still seem on the fence...Say I'd be happy to return any artifact that is significaint to the history of the owner or property. That usually wins them over.  If you dont have to say that don't but if you do find something you would like to donate feel free. I've found you could lose  everything you've found if you just blurt out " I'll share my findings". You could end up with a hand full of pull tabs and dead batteries in your M/D.   Just my opioin and some will not agree...  Good Luck

I never gone out yet just gold panning so far going to make a metal detector then go out but from someone new who would be alot like a person you ask therefore I would think 50% of anything you find of value and junk you haul away. Of course there are probably pretty standard rates and if you live somewhere that has lots of thunters the people may well know the rates. But if you live somewhere like me with little backyards its something you wont be doing much of.

Believe it or not, in the United States the topic rarely comes up unless YOU bring it up.

Look the odds are you aren't going to find very much of value, especially to the owner.   And if you do your work right and don't damage the yard, you're doing the owner a favor by removing junk just as he is doing you a favor by allowing you to hunt.   I agree with mfitz70.

The only real exception to that is if you were hunting a site that you knew was a likely target for a large cache, especially if it was reasonable to expect it to be "common" knowledge.   Meaning if I were hunting for a cache in a section of a property that Jesse James or Butch Cassidy or Sam Ketchum were known to have frequented between jobs, and the owners said "I hear ol' Jesse may have buried some gold down by the creek", I'd go for the pre-dig agreement.

There have been several very interesting posts and discussions on this and related posts over the last year or so.  It would probably be worth going back over some of them, especially these:

Thanks Bitburg! I read all three of those and came to the conclusion that for sure:
1) If you do happen to find anything, be sure to share a small token/reward with the owner - it could get you more potential sites in the future.
2) When hunting with others - fellow M/D's then share the spoils and again set aside something for the owner.

I just keep learning more every day with this forum!
Cheesy
