Go Up Go Down

Hello!  My buddy and I have been looking into doing some metal detecting.  He's dive certified and interested in doing some underwater detecting, but he also wants to do some dry land hunting as well.  We've been looking around for a good detector for doing both and have come to the conclusion that the minelab excalibur /ii might be the best detector, but for a first detector, he's unsure if he wants to spend $1000+, and would rather spend around $600.  What machine do you all prefer?  Is there anything for under a grand that performs well in both wet and dry?  I was telling him that the detector would hold its value fairly well if he takes care of it, but he's still hesitant.  Thanks in advance for any help you can offer! ..oh yeah, any of you ever modify a land detector for underwater use? thanks again!  ~Chris

Chris, for the money the Garrett Sea Hunter is a great water detector. Mine was stolen a few months ago and am looking to replace it, so have been watching ebay and other places to see if mine or a good replacement shows up. Have seen several go for 3 to 5 hundred lately so keep looking you will find what you need in your price range.  Also check out Kellycos web page they have good prices and can answer questions.

Thanks for the replys!  I'll look into the detectors you all mentioned.  For me, I've been thinkin along the lines of an idx pro...even though it's an older machine, I've heard many people say it's one of the best ever made.  It also holds its value well too.  But dangit, I can't let him get all the sunken treasure!...I might have to get me an underwater detector too! haha.  I wonder how well an idx pro would work underwater...I don't see why it couldn't be modified for that...not sure if it could handle the mineralization though?

Hey Bomber. What size coil do you use with the excalibur? Is there times that you think you would perfer the other size coil? Asking because I'll be buying an excal soon. Thanks
