I'd love to get some good pictures, and I'm having trouble with these coming in clear and focused. I have a Canon powershot A75, and another one that's a slightly newer model with pretty much the same features but more megapixels. Problem is, I don't know what setting to put it on.. to get that nice close up. I also have a flat bed scanner, but don't want to scratch up the glass by scanning the coins cause of all the dirt/grit on them.

Hmmm - ideas?
 Idea
here is a scan with the flat-bed scanner.. lots of corrosion on the pennies Sad

That's probably a much better picture than you would have got from your camera unless you're real good AND use a tripod.
If you want to try taking close ups with the A75, you're going to need a tripod, and one or more good desklamps (preferrably halogen) for auxillary light.  Once you've got the lighting set up and have the camera mounted on the tripod and pointed nearly as straight down on the coins as possible, I'd suggest taking 4 pictures (one with your camera set to "indoor" with flash; one with the camera set to "indoor" without the flash; one with the camera set to "slow shutter" with flash; and one with the camera set to "slow shutter" without the flash).  Compare the 4 pictures and you should know the best set up for future coin shots.

If the other camera has a "close up" option, use it.....but still use the tripod and the auxillary lighting.   When I shot the neck of the lysol bottle, I used a Kodak EasyShare C613 on a small tripod with overhead lighting from the dining room lamp and auxillary lighting from a halogen desklamp.   I used the closeup option with the flash on.   I probably could have got a better shot except that I had to hold the bottle in my hand to make sure the light hit the lettering properly.
