Thanks everyone. There was a lot of good advice in there and I'm starting to follow it. I've also toned down the amount of discrimination I use, since I've read that the Umax loses some depth when you discriminate very much. It's working too.

Some times turning down the sence just  turns down the Trash.

You may only get down four or a few inches but it works down for The better.

Thanks GoldDigger1950. I've been thinking of digging more of the "clipped tones", when in discrimination mode because I've read that in heavily mineralized soil the discriminate mode can discriminate good targets right out because of the mineral content you're fighting. Thing is that so far it's been very accurate in terms of that, but I do want to find the deeper stuff. I guess I either have to dig more or study buddhism if I want to find something deeper

You never know what you missed until you dig those odd little tones. I once dug a half dime that I nearly passed over as being too faint. Like it was a piece of foil. This was a half dime coin not a dime split in half although I did find a Mercury dime that was clipped by a mower.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Scotius, the faint signals refered to are when you search in 'all metal' mode, also try searching the fringe areas of the parks where the bushes just seem to creep a little closer each year
