When you say "turn it up til it starts falsing and then turn halfway down" does that mean turn my gain up til it gives me the overload signal and tells me to turn the gain down?

When you ask a question like this, it is always better to quote the original message. To do that, you highlight the portion of the message (or the whole message) and then use the Quote button at the top of the message you are reading and have highlighted. Then there's no confusion as to who you are addressing.

And that will help us to give you a true answer to your question for example if I had to say "Yes OK" every one on this thread would wonder what I'm on about but doing it like this

Yes OK, it's clear who it was meant for.

All the best and have fun

my 2c worth of advice is start using your machine on factory settings with discrimination.then go over the same ground with a setting with out so much discrimination and so on.this way you learn the response that your machine give you over the same ground.and you will pick up the difference.LEARN your machine before you start changing the settings.and READ and learn the manual.you will be surprised on how many answers to your questions will be there. And yes you will always leave something behind, but will be still there for the next time.
And dig everything that your machine make a sound on.After all the BEST discrimination its not that of you detector. Its your eyes.
Don't worry wont be long that you will be giving advice to others.
Good luck

I would start with the sensitivity taking it up until it starts falsing and back down half way.

Do you Ground BALLANCE IT?

Lets try this again.  Yes I do ground balance it.  That is another issue I wonder about.  How many passes over a target should I make?  I usually make 4 or 5.  I'm guessing that's to much.  I worry that my machine will begin to balance to the properties of the metal.  When you say "sensitivity" I am assuming you mean gain?

you won't do any damage to your  settings. Make as many passes as it takes to picture what you have and the exact location. come at it from several angles, visualize how the characteristics change. With me, sometimes I find something on the order of a Volkswagen and I use this technique to find the limit and shape of the target. You could be reading two or more targets at once and 'nibbling' around the perimeter might separate trash from treasure.

Generally, they are the same. Lower sensitivity does not mean less depth. What it means is the intensity of the target return is amplified at a lesser rate making the signal more easily isolated in the ground. Contrary to popular belief, lowering sensitivity can actually increase your depth and target isolation. Recovery is much easier that way.
