Is there such a thing as interference with the metal detector? If it is beeping on and off. then metal is somewhere?

I've had interference under power poles and Radar.

Other Like detectors can mess with ya if close enough. Cool

The differences in frequency between two metal detectors can cause interference when the two frequencies "beat" against one another. The audio component of an ultrasonic security system can also cause interference.

The basic answer to your second part of the question is yes, the detector is supposed to make a sound when passing over metal.

Libby, also check to make sure your coil cable is wrapped tight and not swinging in the breeze every time you swing your coil or bump into something.  Your coil can pick up the cable, especially near the coil head.
