Go Up Go Down

I just started metal detecting this spring.  I have a Bounty Hunter Land Star and I just love it.  I have been pretty good in parks since that is where I mostly go.  I just started using my detector at beaches and when I have been searching in the water I find it difficult to locate my target since the sand constantly moves.  Does anyone have any advice?  Also, do you find a target and then set the detector down in the sand.  My detector can not be completely submerged.  Any beach advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You need a good stainless steel sand scoop. When you are in shallow water and you get a hit with the detector. Stop and put your foot right behind the search coil. Leaving your foot inplace remove the search coil and place the digging tip of the sand scoop right at the tip of you foot, not on your foot. Then use your foot to drive the scoop into the sand. Scoop up the sand and shake it off in the water. If the target is not in the scoop, repeat the process.
My sand scoop has a floating handle. It makes it easyer to use as it supports its own weight. Hope this helps and good hunting.

Hmm... that floating handle idea is good!

I'm intending getting into shallow water detecting on beaches in the UK, because everyone and his dog detects on the dry sand. Having floating kit is a great idea to prevent losing stuff. Even a floating 'buoy' attached with a lanyard would work I suppose.

Another thing to keep in mind depending on where you have your discrimination set at is a number of water hunters attatch a magnet in the base of the scoop to catch small magnetic items such as nails and bobby pins that could easily slip through the holes in the scoop and be problematic in locating.

its been said before but attaching a hairbrush to the inside bottom of your scoop will catch chains before they slip out

Water definitely creates moving targets, which gets a little frustrating.  I take time to really pinpoint my target, and use one foot as a third hand to keep my place with toes at the edge of the hole.  Wrap foam padding around the handle of the detector and secure with packing tape, so it has some ability to float.  I also have a floating plastic sifter to dump sand into that's tethered to my belt.  Remember to be patient and persistent!  Don't rush.

Yes great tips on the floating handle and the brush in the scoop.
Small changes, do make a lot of difference in getting any small items.

He he especially someone like me who is 'yours clumsy'.
Will take the advice.
