I've never used one.

I like changing the angle of the coil from time to time and would think it would be a pain. :Smiley

I looked at them awhile back and think its just one more thing that would end up on the floor of the truck. If your hunting parks or school yards where the ground is flat it maybe OK but like Homefire said I like to change the angle of the coil on the beach woods and creek beds.

Yes the ability to change angle makes sense. I was ordering a cover and when i saw that, i thought i would ask.
Thanks a bunch.

I had one.....it broke on the second or third outing.    I've got a coil that could use one (suffers from serious wobble), but until I find a solution with more endurance, I'm not getting another.

I know some Surf Pirates use them to stop the coil from moving in the moving water.

I've never used a loop support.  Like Seldom and Homefire I like to be able to change the coil angle on uneven ground.  I was a little interested in them when they first appeared, but decided they were  just something extra I didn't need.  Detecting

To me they ought to be called coil supports or locks. When I saw this I was expecting some kind of spring or bungee type deal for the wire. Even in the description it says for the search coil.

Go Up Go Down

I made one of those years ago when I first saw them and tried it. I broke 3 plastic coil holder bolts, and cussed alot because I couldnt adjust my coil to get under and over stuff,  and then made what you see in the pic. My only concern with my detectors is the coil gong backward and ripping the coil wire out of the coil. I hunt 90% of the time in my preset postion but can fold the brace out of the way in a second to get under bushes, up hills, whatever. My detectors get ALOT of use, and very ruff use. See the pic with the blue thing under the control housing? (pic #9) thats a rubber grip I added because I jump on my mountain bike and rest that grip on the handlebars. It protect the coil wire and absorbs some of the vibration and jarring. The detector gets jarred, knocked around, and constant vibration from the off road tires, not to mention I wreck with my detector in hand a few times a year lol. I make those out of black plastic kitchen utensils. Find one at the dollar store with a hole in the end to hang it and long enough to do the job. attach the end to the coil with a zip tie (photo #4) measure the length you want and add an inch or 2 because I put the bend in it with a large soldering iron, then make the final cut to length so that the "perfect position" makes the end of the brace  rest against the twist adjustment (photo #5) I simply slip the zip tie off the end on the shaft(pic #6) and fold the other end out of the way. It's fast and easy, and if you wreck your mountain bike really bad, you wont care about your detector anyway lol. It's been raining for 3 days, so I went out in between showers, thats why its in full rain gear mode in the pic. I do that with any 8" coil or above in size. Notice the digging tools (pic #2) I cant remember the name of that digging tool, but the handle is junk and comes off in the first week. To save my hand, I put a 3/4" pvc end cap on it, fits perfect, just glue it on. Looks like its time for another rubber handle for it now too lol. Bicycle grips seem to last if you find a good one.

Got wobble? Use black foam pipe insulation. Set your coil tight, cut the insulation at the correct angle and slip it over the shaft using the slit in the insulation. Instant "dewobbulizer." As long as the foam touches the shaft, it will make it much more stable.
