'lo all!

I'm just looking to get into detecting with my son, so looking for a reasonable starter unit that would be good for an 8 year old to learn on.  Something that he can grow with as he gets older...

Thanks!

Most of the Tesoro machines are "turn on and go" with some having more features than others. Try the Tesoro Compadre. I loaned mine to a 3 year old girl who wanted to do what daddy was doing and she handled it just fine and found quite a few coins in the tot lot. At her age, I didn't expect her attention span to go past 10 minutes but she was begging to stay "just a little longer" by the time we were both ready to go home.

It's one of my favorite machines, my Compadre is.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

WikiWelcome from Kansas! I agree the Tesoro machines are great. If price is a consideration, it doesn't get much easier than the Ace series from Garrett.  The 150 is very affordable and is a "real" detector. I have the 250 with 2 coils. That is the one to get in my opinion. Light weight, easy to set, easy to read, easy on batteries. Might look at the fisher f2 while you are shopping. See if you can find someplace that will let you try them out.
