Hi all, I'm looking for a metal detector in good shape. I'd like to hunt yards and parks and also the beach. I also need to hunt Mom-in-laws house before it's sold, she lost a ring somewhere in the yard.

For what you say you will be looking for I would recommend the following.

Garrett Ace 250 metal detector.

It's simple to use.
Has many auto features already on the screen.
Great for finding coins and rings.
Battery life is great and uses 4 AA batteries.
I use recharge batteries in mine.
Eco friendly you know. Plus they pay for themselves in a short amount of time.

There are lots of info on how to use it here, and at Garrett, and you tube video's.
Price is reasonable for what you get.
Do a internet search and you will find Lot's of prices and kit's offered.
Decided what you will use.

I have put Lot's of hours playing with it. Yes playing.
For me it's a joy to use and easy to set up.
But the more you use it are any other detector the better you will become with it.

Hope this helps.   Welcome

As a good starting point also check out the Fisher F4, if you want a meter, or the Tesoro's are great machines too
and you will be fine with either of the brands that we have mentioned here

I've heard a lot of good things as Metal Master mentioned about the Garrett Ace 250. Because of it's reputation, and reliability - I then looked into the Ace 350 (about $75 more) and got that and I love it. Maybe if it pays for itself, I may upgrade to something else. But I've been very happy so far. Do your reading, and check out the detector 'reviews' forum here to get a feel of the major functions/features you're looking for. What kind of price range are you looking for? That's probably most important. My recommendation also once you have a particular brand & model - is to check out the KellyCo website. They're out in Florida, and their service is excellent. Mine was shipped to me in a week with no problems at all.
Good luck, and be sure to share with us what you've decided on.

This does help.. I've been reading up but there are so many variables and choices it's hard to figure out what to get. I was thinking about the Garrett 250 but I also saw the the 350 for less than a hundred more so I'm thinking.. I'm going to copy your post and save it.  Kiss

Gertrude

If you want to go up a little in price that is OK.
You get a few more Bells and Whistles and features.

Make a list of what you want in a detector.

Type of soil you will hunt.
Does it need to be water proof?
How much separation of targets will there be where you hunt?
Go to a web site and read all about the different types they offer.
What they list as the advantages of one over the other for a certain type of terrain or water.
That will help you decide whats important to you and by price is it worth it to you.
Lots of people here to help you.
You know everybody has a different car, and can brag about there model.
Question is what will fit your needs for you.

I just bought a up grade machine myself Garrett AT Pro.
It will fill some areas for me and do the job I think I need.
I was in need of some new features, like my other machine but needed some more bells and whistles.
Water proof a big one. Closer target seperation a plus.
To hunt the places I want to hunt.
May not be for you.

But like you I hunt yards, and it will give me a better separation between targets.
That should give me a chance to see items close to each other in the ground.
Plus its water proof to 10 feet Garrett says. So when I go back to the beach I will not have the fear of dropping it in the water. I do water on vacation but not the rest of the year. See choices.
I worried about dropping my ACE 250 in the water are getting caught in the rain with it. So I liked that feature.
See I made a list of features and what I could afford and went from there.

Garrett has a how to Learn and Explore link at there web site. Its under the hobby division link at he top of there web site.
I recommend go there and watch the videos on each model in this section.
Will help you be aware of features you may not have thought of. Then when your all done checkout some other sites.
Fisher, Tersoro, etc and compare features and your needs.

Yes it will take a couple of evenings to do.

But it beats buying a unit then only turning around looking for another shortly after that.

Get the features you want, give the machine you purchase a chance. That means hours of use before saying that machine just does not work?

Drove my autos for years, after I researched what I needed. One 25 years another 18 years.

Do your homework first not after you buy?

Hope this helps, everyone has a different need and purpose that's why they sale so many models.   Welcome

Since everyone here is offering Gertrude advise on what to look for in a detector and no one is offering to SELL her one, I am moving this thread to "Beginners" which far more appropriate for what this thread has evolved into it.

The Ace 250 is great and so is the Fisher F2 for around $200. I have both and use each one every time I go out....Warren
