Ridge Runner is right.

Before you can select the right detector (which is a lot like buying the right automobile or the right camera), you need to ask and answer a lot of questions.   Here are some of the questions:

1)   What is your budget?   What is the most you are willing to spend?
2)   What will you mostly be hunting for?  (Coins, jewelry, relics, large caches buried more than 2 or 3 feet deep, gold nuggets, or a combination? )
3)   Where will you be doing most of your hunting---will it be on dry land or underwater or a combination like at a beach?
4)   If water is involved, is it salt water or fresh water and how deep under the water will you be going?
5)   Does the detector have to be new, or can a good used detector meet your needs?
6)   Do you have the patience to dig every signal or do you just want to dig "good" signals even if it means missing some items?
7)   How many hours at a time do you plan on swinging your detector?   Some detector are really heavy and even a light detector can get heavy real quickly if it is not balanced properly?
Cool   How important is a digital read-out to you?
9)   How does the detector feel?
10) How good is the warranty (and do you qualify for it)?
11) Where is the nearest repair shop if you need their services?

I'm sure other members will add to the list, but all of these questions should be considered when you choose a detector.
