Go Up Go Down

Hi everybody,
I am quite new to treasure hunting and would like to know how good are the DIY metal detectors (posted in this forum) compared to the commercial ones.
I live in India and there's virtually no market for metal detectors . I could buy imported ones but they are very expensive. I am planning to build one based on one of the schematics posted in this forum.

The problem is I really don't know which one to choose (I intend to use it to find buried gold/silver).
Will it have metal discrimination feature that commercial ones have?
I  had built a small metal detector (published in EFY magazine) when I was in school almost 10 years ago. I never used for real treasure hunting- I guess I didn't believe one could find a treasure in 21st century.

That's a good plan, Mindfree and almost any of the three PI machines being discussed right now are worthy projects. One thing I should mention is that even the cheapest, most unworthy of the metal detectors on the market will be useful to you for learning how to use a detector. There are several models available from China that will work as a starter machine while you build your project. In an area like India where detectors are not common, the finds will be incredible and so will the trash you find. By trash, I mean bottle tops, pull tabs and foil - the human detritus.

Look on eBay for some of the cheaper models which will get you started. And remember that even the best project in the world isn't a treasure radar at all. It is a metal radar which will discover more trash than treasure but those with experience just dig it all and separate the good from the bad.

Hello GD,
Thank you for your reply.
Do you recommend any particular chinese model ?
Also I would like to know if anyone has successfully built any of the 3 PI detectors mentioned. If yes then how does it perform.

Just go to eBay, search on Metal Detector and see the lowest cost "Buy it Now" models. The brand name of Seben comes up often. Those are all the Chinese models and one is as good as another. Buy the one you can best afford. Use it to gain experience and you will also find some worthy treasure which can be used to finance your next machine. When you are finished building your dream detector, sell the one you have been using. It's a win-win all around. Enjoy.

I mentioned in another thread that Harbor freight sells their top model for $50 US currency and I have that model and it works surprisingly well. Not the performance of $300 and up detectors but certainly better than cheapo dime store models. There are websites that detail how to make improvements to it with a little web surfing on your part. I have located coins, nails, buckles, and plain trash metal with it. It is Chinese made but from some company who makes them under a couple of other brand names, same model. It is probably the best detector for your money if looking to buy real low in cost.

very interesting, especially when you find the metal through the metal detector by yourself, the feeling is extremely good. So I trust where I bought my metal detector for gold, and have used it to find my ring in the garden.
