Welcome GA_dave from NT Australia , what you need to decide is what you intend to search for and size of your budget , some detectors are good alrounders , others are Gold specific you can find both in the middle price range , i asked the same question when i joined this forum and settled on a Whites MXT Pro which is considered  a great alrounder , goodluck . cheers Mick

Welcome from Arizona.

So what are you comfortable spending?  Even more depends upon what you want to do with it.   Assuming you want to keep the price under $500 here are some detectors to consider and assuming you are looking for a "general purpose" detector (in no particular order)

Tesoro Compadre (no frills, no bells and whistles....just turn on and go, but it will give a lifetime of useful service and comes with a warranty to ensure it does)
Tesoro Silver microMax
Tesoro Cibola
White's Coinmaster Pro
White's Prizm 5G
Fisher F-4
Garrett Ace 250 or 350
Teknetics Delta 4000

Ask your self where your going to be searching , out in parks or around houses or beaches or all. There are deals on about all of them. I would make sure you get one with a warranty if you buy used.

Get a new one most used ones will not have a warranty unless its from a dealer who may give you 30 days if your lucky, you will have to learn how to use the machine no matter what one you decide on. Get a simple one to start then set up a test garden in your yard by burying some coins and trash and see what the machine's readings are, if you really like the hobby you can up-grade to a more complicated that can be programed for various conditions. I use a Whites XLT and have great results with it for years now.....DW
