Hi,

New to the site.  Glad I found it.  Wanted to see about detectors.  I am an electrical engineer by trade so interested in those DIY plans...need to get 15 posts until i can download the plans. Sad

Anyone have any exp. with home made detectors?

Thanks,
BP

Well, i live near the mojave desert ca, lots of old mining sites.  I hear people detect over tailings for gold left behind.  So, yes, nuggets in tailings and maybe new finds?

Welcome to these wonderful forums. You'll have your 15 posts in no time.

Any metal detector will detect gold. Be wary of setting your discrimination too high or you may throw the baby out with the bathwater. Set it completely off for tailings work. Don't expect to get rich. Those tailings have been worked to death for decades now.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

I had thought of that...I'm not trying to get rich, but it would be nice to get some gold from time to time.  Warning:  Bit of a subjective question to follow:  Is it worthwhile to join a gem club that owns some claims?  I've seen membership dues anywhere from one time $25 to $3000 annual.  Does the old adage you get what you pay for apply or are those upper end groups trying to weed out the "unclean."

VLF Detectors running 15Khz or more are hotter on gold then a coin shooting machine running 5 or 6 Khz range.

Most important in nugget and pocket hunting detector would be Ground Bal.

Hi BP, I'm new to the forums myself. I would encourage you to stay around and help us design/reverse engineer/modify some of the better detectors. They all work pretty much the same way (i.e. within the specific categories bfo, p.i., vlf). With the vlf a signal is transmitted and eddy currents form in the target which is picked up by a receive coil. The angle of the reflected signal (as it is different for various materials i.e. like lossyness, q) is what largely allows these detectors to discriminate against targets.

I would like to see schematics on some of the widely available detectors such as harbor freight and bounty hunters that are everywhere. I have thought about taking one of these detectors and gutting them out just for the casing, coil, and rod and putting my own circuit board in there.

I too am working on that 15 post limit!  Perhaps this would be a great opportunity to discuss design ideas! Tongue
