These sound good on the first sweep (in one direction but not in another. backsweep, etc.). When pinpointing I may get an extremely loud pinpoint. I read here to basicly ignore these. What is ocurring that causes this? Could i be missing something good?

Dig it, and you'll never know if you dont dig it, are true...........BUT I use VLF with a 99 numeral TID display for a reason, I like discrimination for trashy sites, and thats mainly where I hunt. If I wanted to dig everything I would get a PI so I could dig even deeper trash! lol. I dig as much of the junk as I can stand, and as my tolerance goes down, the discrimination goes up. I dont like digging pop cans at 2', large iron junk that shows as around a quarter. If I"m in doubt, and Ive walked around it from every angle, I'll usually dig it. But I rarely dig a one side signal. Yes Ive gotten coins on edge that did that, but 95% or more of the time....its junk. I spend the extra time walking around the target to see if I'm getting the same results from the same angle, if so...I'll dig it, if not, probably not unless its a bouncy TID numbers (those can be large silver jewelry like bracelets, broaches, and even large mens rings will do that). Tell them guys to dig that junk for you since they want to dig so much  Funny Bottom line for me is ......Is it repeatable? I'll dig any repeatable signal thats showing about the same TID numbers and most that dont.

You need to learn your detector, once you do....you'll be fairly certain if its a pop can or not. If I'm in doubt, I'll dig the plug and go to about 12" and stop. I once dug a trash can lid as a kid at around 3' deep! lol  Ah.......to have that energy now!

yes they sometims do, and I believed the same thing 10 years ago and love the old school detectors. But I like finding more stuff faster, and I really like not digging junk like I used to. I'd rather save my back and knees nowadays (at least in the junk fields I hunt in) In the open farm  fields here, I dig everything. Someday I'll have to visit you out there. Always wanted to go detecting there since I went to visit a friend in Santa Fe. It was stunningly beautiful along our drives! We can swap detectors for a day lol.

When I used my sovereign GT I dug all the numbers that ID'd the coin numbers, and since then I got my Whites
and now if it bleeps from -10 to plus 94 I dig the lot, NO PRISONERS, NO MORE MR NICEGUY, Grin Grin Grin Grin Grin
with one way signals the signal on the reverse sweep could be masked by near by Iron, so as the Guys said
did the lot, and you will go home happy.

If you are using tone ID a zinc penny close to the surface will give an iron signal one way and a pulltab the other. Angry   Dig it all or learn your detectors language.  Idea I'm still learning! Cheesy

Aw, come on Vision.  You're at least 21 years younger than me, and if I'm unsure I'll still dig up the targets.!  Grin Grin Of course I blew out my heel earlier this year, so far this season has been a complete wash for me!  If I can get the doc to let me put my weight on it within the next month or so, I might be able so salvage the tale end of it.  And I'll guarantee, if I'm unsure about a target, I'll dig it!  (If I was hunting the ghettos like you, I might not either, now that I think about it!)
