ok hi all, total newbie and won't have my detector for two more weeks. I'm worried as an ex cop where I can legally metal detect. Let's say driving around see a patch of woods off roadway ? Surely someone owns those woods. I'm worried I'm going to get my Garrett and then not be able to search anywhere would kind of put a damper on things. I live close to Waco, i know user name so creative  lol.. Any insight or knowledge to the newbie would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Welcome from Indiana  No worries there, lots of places to detect no matter where you live. Some of my best finds came from "the right of way" that area between the sidewalk and the curb in every city is public property. A homeowner may bitch, if so, move on but its still your right to be there and search it by law. Also lots of schools, parks, city and state properties, but my favorites are homeowners permission to search their yard. I go to the oldest parts of town for that, and always get good finds that way. You'll find alot  of good people here that know where and how to find treasure will help you.  Detecting

You will find tons of places to hunt.   Don't fret.

About that little strip of land between the side walk and the curb!    The home owner is the person they go after if it's out of spects.

I would sick my dog on ya!    LOL!

Welcome from the Blue Mountains of northeastern Oregon!  Talking about the parking strips between the sidewalk and the curb, in my town it is public property... ,but  the owner of the property it fronts is required to maintain it; that is, cut the grass, keep it in good condition, water the grass, maintain any trees the city has planted, etc., etc. .  So I guess in that case the property owner would certainly feel that they had a say.  But, again, it is public property.  The only strips I've ever searched are when I had permission to search the yard also, except in the cases of public building like schools, parks and other public areas.   Detecting

Don't mean to sound like a Bone Head but when your town starts clamping down on Metal Detecting folks think about it.

Right on homefire, great  point!  I'm like you, I would probably sick the dog on you, too!  Take it back, my dog would just come out and try to lick you to death!  Then take off down the road on some scent it picked up!  But I would confront you, not necessarily with hostile intent, but if I hadn't searched it yet, you wouldn't get to.  I did allow one guy who was detecting at the old school across the street form me to detect my strip, but I had already detected it.  He had a lot newer detector than mine and I wanted to see what he might find.  I'm proud to say the he didn't find anything there!

By the way, wacoron, if you do hunt the strips, put yourself in your cop mode and think about what you would have done if you saw someone detecting while you were in your cruiser patrolling the neighborhood!  You probably don't have to worry about it too much (unless you were a "mean cop")!  Grin LOL

That put Waco on the map for sure, but I going to bet that most of the locals would rather forget about that part of their history. I think he's looking for coins and jewelry, not bullets, nutcases, and tragedy. I know I wouldnt want to be on that property where such tragedy took place. I'm not superstitious at all, I just wouldnt  like to be reminded of such a tragic event by putting myself there where it happened. It's not like a battle site where mutual combat took place. Those people were brainwashed, tortured, molested, then many died.
