Go Up Go Down

G'day All,
I am building a pi detector, based on the hammerhead, and am at the stage of calibration.  I have made an adjustable resistor network that covers 300 ohm to 1200 ohm.  When tuning between these ranges i see an output consistent with figure 22 on page 15 of carl morelands article dated 21 july 2006.  I got this article off the web. He states in the article that the resistor value is adjusted for minimum ringing.  The transmit pulse is 15 uS and the flyback peaks between 240-380 volts depending on the value of the network resistor.  I have only populated the transmit side of the circuit so far but i am unsure which ringing is being referred to.  I have an oscilloscope across the coil.  Is it the decay of the signal after the peak, (240-360 volts)? I have made the 7" mono coil with teflon insulation and pe spiral wrap.  It is not yet potted.  It measures 402uH and has a resistance of 4 ohms.  Any assistance or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Yes the Ringing of the Fly Back.   Read the section on Damping.

Thanks for your rapid reply Homefire,
I used that article to build my coil. There seems to be a lot of misinformation out there on the web. I will have to install the first amplifier as indicated in the article. I thought I would be able to see something between the ends of the coil.  Thanks again I will advise how I get on.
Bert
