I am a newbie to metal detecting and recently managed to acquire a PI Penetrator 5500. I would really appreciate ANY and ALL tips and tricks regarding the use of this unit. THANKS!

As with 90% of PI units, they don't have discrimination unless they have a serious computer on board. Be prepared to dig every target. That's the way most of the old time pros do it anyway. You'll be ahead of the game to develop that habit.

Have fun and happy hunting!

Hey, would you be willing to let me rent it from you? What options do you have with it? Do you have the 3d imaging? I'm looking at buying it myself, but not sure I want to spend the money on it and the places that sell it don't allow rentals. I want to test it out for a few weeks or so.

Thanks very much for your response GD! I certainly have much to learn about this 'machine' before it can accomplish more than locating the proverbial manhole cover at 6". The unit does appear to have discrimination capability and is apparently dependent on which antenna is utilized. Hopefully someone who has experience with one of these will be kind enough to shorten my learning curve...

Happy Hunting to you as well!

Hi Mark. Unfortunately the unit I have is a 'co-op' between myself and 2 friends so the rental aspect is not a possibility at this point. We did not opt for the 3D imaging option on the unit. Like you we wanted to determine if the unit was going to be useful for reliable locating but since none of us are experienced with this type of unit it may be a while before we are capable users.

Thanks for your response!

Can it locate smaller objects, too?

Yes it will definitely locate smaller items Mark. I was kidding about the manhole cover... My understanding is that the PI units are capable of locating items deeper in the ground.

Happy Hunting!

OK, guys. This stops now. No renting or loaning arranged here. Do it away from the forum and not via PM.
