I went to the download site and found some really cool maps to use for prospecting....if I was still stationed in Europe! Are there any available for the Pacific NW? It would be awesome to find some place close to FT Lewis, although I am pretty consigned to the fact that I will have to leave the built up areas to find something really cool. Modern era finds are great, but, just like most everyone else, I would like to find something older.

Have you received your membership kit yet with your mining guide?

Not very deeply...just joined last night. I figured I would save the trip for that particular rabbit hole for a later date. I spent several hours in other areas and getting to know the site a bit more.

I have, but I have O.C.D. when it comes to maps, and there is no replacement for first hand knowledge (that hopefully doesn't send you on a goose chase).

The trouble with that is simple. Prospectors here who have their own claims are not likely to invite someone they just met to use their claim with them or without them. Same with sharing someone else's claim map with a stranger. I wouldn't even tell my best pal here about someone else's claim because they'd be breaking the law just looking over the land so there is no point.

You're going to have to find your own way on this one. Try doing a Google search for gold bearing areas in your state. Use regular Google then switch to Google Maps when you get an interesting hit. The GPAA mining guide has dozens of maps of claims that they manage. All members can use them but only members can. Same reason. They are actually private - for members only.

I do not expect someone to just hand me something they have worked so hard for. I know I have to do all my own homework, but hoping for some pointers to get me in the right direction. I have access to a lot of mineral claims through the clubs , but staking my own has been challenging here in WA...can't help but think I keep missing something.

As far as detecting goes, I need all the help I can get. For instance, ideas of where to go to find artifacts and fossils, not specifics. To me, it is all treasure. My son is really interested in detecting as well. He will be heading off to college in Texas soon, so any hints for him would be welcome as well.

Whoa, Lugknut. Remove the chip from your shoulder and be prepared to buck up to some serious study. There is no easy path to finding gold. You still have to read and understand geology. We cannot, even the experts, impart that knowledge into your brain. Reading, watching videos and DVDs along with study are all going to help. This is my last attempt to help you on this. If you fail to grasp what I am doing to help you along, then you are on your own. What I am doing hers is a teaching technique known as "guided discovery." I am guiding you to the right rock without actually saying, "There. Look under that rock." Every plot of land you visit in your prospecting will be different so anything we tell you here might be wrong and we don't want you blaming technique that worked for one of us over there.

Go to the RAM library at

and look at the prospecting books. They're not terribly expensive and when you are done reading them, you can pass them on to your son. Look under the Hobby Division, Other Products and RAM Books. The best starter book on the subject is this one:
