What do you guys consider a  ,, pin pointer ,, ?  What is a pinpointer supposed to do what a regular detector cannot do ? I just wonder .   Cornelius

Bomber . If you mean the little units that are sold in a hardware stor you have to remember that these only detect iron ( nails in a wall ) . They certainly do not detect silver or gold coins . If you are thinking about the units that are made by the regular detector builders ( like White ) you must remember that they should cost quite a bit more than $20.  or $30 .   You would have the same result when you use the smallest coil available . You fasten the unit with a belt around your waist and use a cable to connect to the coil . Now you have a unit that can reach into every nook that you have to test .  Better yet is to build or buy a small PI metal detector and use the probe as described by Paul . Now you realy have a strong detecting tool . Only 3/4 " diameter by 5 " long . Good for looking in any place you want , even to be used in bore holes where your handheld unit will not reach . Just my idea of getting the right thing to work for me . As a matter of fact I made three probes like described by Paul . The only difference is that I wound my own coil around the ferrite rod . ( just one layer of 0.5 mm cu-wire ) . The rod should be insulated by winding insulating tape around it ( just as little as possible ) . Make sure the resistance is the same as the coil that is used in normal use of the unit .   Try it out , the cost is about $2.50 and you will be surprised about this pinpointer . Ask Paul what he did to make sure .   Cornelius

A little more help:

To make the p.i. probe you will need to know the resistance in ohms of your standard coil.
Most multimeters have a resistance setting that you can measure it with.
Lets say your standard coil measures out at something like 1.05 ohms.
Use this chart to determine how much wire you will need:

You can see by this that you could use 10m of 26 swg.

Ferrite rod is easily obtainable a 5 or 6 inch length could be got from somewhere like radio shack - it is commonly used in radios.
As Cornelius said, make sure you insulate the rod before you wind the wire around it.
What to do when you have wound one layer and have loads of wire left?
Simple - just wind the rest around one end in multiple layers (this will give more sensitivity at that end)
All you need to do then is fit it in a small length of plastic (plumbing?), connect a cable and plug ...... and enjoy!

Hey mike there is no screw to be adjusted so what now ?

Hi d.p.swing,
This is just a guess as I am not familiar with that pinpoint probe, but normally the external screw adjustment fits into a slot in the circuit board adjuster (the pot) and thats what will have fallen inside, thats why there is a hole now.
If you can get the probe apart it should be obvious how it goes back together, maybe you can glue the end of the external adjuster rod carefully to the board adjuster.
Only touch glue to the very centre of the circuit board adjuster where the slot is.

I hope this helps, otherwise you will have to find someone who repairs electronic equipment like TV's etc.
Its got to be worth trying yourself first and certainly less expensive.

All the best Mike.

I go cheap whenever I can. -real cheap!  I've been using the CenTek from Harbor Freight.
Value wise, it really does the job for me.  If you don't use a pinpointer now, the use of even a cheap one will speed up your recovery time immensely.

tried several automax V4-kellyco,centec harbor frieght- neither fit the bill in my book so I spent the money and got a pistol probe-definately worth the money-have found things in the yard just useing probe no detector-hit items up to 5" deep.but the choice is yours-me I like getting what I pay for.the first two was lucky to get a hit at 1/2"
