Just got into MD'ing. All the land around me here in South Alabama seems to be nothing more than a really hard packed red clay/rock mixture. And its some hard stuff, kinda like concrete lol. I'm sure others are dealing with similar type ground and since my spade seems to just bounce off it how are you folks digging down to your find once you locate something? Gas powered auger ? lol. Just curious guess I need to stick to the woods and farm pastures .

Get youself a Chisel and a hammer for the hard stuff, if it always been that hard the targets wont be very deep. Id go for the farm soil and softer dirt if you can find places to hunt, Good Luck....DW

I have had to dig into that southern red clay as well for various things, a good sharp pick axe, and a digging bar from lowes or your other hardware store have always been the best way i know by hand. i havent yet tried for the good stuff in the clay it has always been work stuff before.

I agree on the pick, I hand dug a septic tank in that stuff once and tried everything. Used a pick and a jack hammer Smiley

Well, thanks for the input. From the replies I have received it seems it isn't just my perception. Thanks again, going to go look for real dirt lol

For shallow signals say 4 inch's, try a old fashioned Ice Pick.

Chips away with very little effort needed.

You will be surprised how the hard stuff chips away.

Plus you can work more selective around your find.

Let the tool do the work.

Yes for deeper a pick axe for sure.

two suggestions......1) pick-axe is the way to go  (although in a pinch the tool shown here

will work.   You'll just have to put some muscle to it)

and 2) make the most of that short period of time after a storm when the soil is firmer than gumbo and softer than blacktop.

One fellow here used to use an auger on a cordless electric drill to dig through the bark in tot lots. Might work on your clay. Cheap enough to try on a small scale even at home with a corded drill.
