A climbing axe (like those used by mountain climbers) works as well.

Wow lot's of great ideas for digging tools, but if it was me I would keep the tool of choice as small as possible, remember you do have to tote it around with you.
I tend to travel as lite as I can ..... Great

I use a military folding shovel with the pick at the end... two tools in one...light enough to tote... strong enough to use in hard stuff!

In that case Viracocha is correct.   A military folding shovel with a pick at one end will do the trick.   And if that's too much weight or too large, they've got some cheap knockoffs out there now that actually hold up pretty well (but I'd augment them with the Ames digger just because it's so good with roots).

Thanks again for the input, I got myself a small (maybe 14") hand pick. A pointed pick on one side and about a 3" scoop on the other side. I just tried it out in the front yard and I was only able to get down maybe 4"s before I started hitting rock. Md'ing is going to be tough here. Maybe more like work then hobby lol .

A bad day digging is better than a good day at the office!

Dig around your target, dont want to damage it if its a coin in excellent condition, get your self a pin-pointer also, they come in very handy. You can get one at harbor freight for about $17.00, i have mine for 3 years now and it works great. Good Luck....DW

Good advice. I get the impression that good old elbow grease is always needed.
