I don"t know anything about southern red clay but I live in Michigan clay country and we've been having a very dry summer. I use a fiskars transplanting trowel that looks like some kind of mean knife (double points on the end , root saw on one side). I got it at walmart for $8 ; it still takes some effort and you have to be careful to pinpoint and plug really well but it works in my rock hard clay.

I do believe he means one of these

depending upon whether you take it off one of these

or one of these

The second one is the one I had in mind. That is the one I used. Works GREAT in hard clay and gravel.

I can see how that would be easy to convert and if you did the job correctly it would be a very sturdy and useful tool.....Always like to see the DIY tools members come up with.

Here's another idea for digging in rock hard soil; a rock hound/prospector's rock pick about the size of a standard hammer.  Works great in rocks and hard pack soil!  Hammer on one end, pick on the other. Victory   Wise

I live near the IN and MI border and we have alot of clay here. I use a Razor Edge Gator Digger tool that I altered. The handle on those are junk and comes off in no time leaving a hard metal round end to hurt your hand. I took a 1" pvc cap and epoxied that to the end of it so I can push with the palm of my hand with it. Also I use a long double sided drywall saw to cut tuff roots and tuff plugs works great! For the tough stuff like caly and parking lot gravel I use a 14" weed puller tool (this one is hardened steel, I dont know where I got it, been using it for years) for breaking up and digging around my targets. Works great in deep holes to loosen soil. I also carry a long handled screwdriver with a magnetic tip. My old leather carpenters pouch on one side of my belt with tool holders on the other side to balance the weight works good for me. I'll take some pics later to post. Altering that digger tool is a must have or it will hurt your hand. Thanks for posting that question, I bet alot of veterans also could use some digging tool tips. I know when I move to florida I'll be asking what the hell do I dig this sand with? lmao

Here is a picture of the digger I made from an old cultivator point. Hope this helps with the confusion.
