So this may be a simple question for some and if it has been covered previously I'm sorry Embarrassedbut I was wondering why "nitric acid" is the one to be used to test for gold? What is the difference between it and sulfuric for instance? I realize it has a different chemical composition but does gold react different to one over the other? My main reason for asking is it is hard to get nitric up here. Thanks for any help or suggestions Smiley

Nitric is used as it will Digest any and all metals other then Gold and the Platinum Group Metals.

Test Kits can be had cheap enough.

The acid test kits are easy to find as you saw with the ebay link. It is also a good idea to keep small samples of known karat gold to compare. Some samples I have tested were not what I would call a "normal" alloy. It helped to have the known karat samples to do a side by side scratch on the touchstone.

The Mizar M-24 is a nice unit to take in the field.

Once again, thanks to everyone for your help. I have lots to go on now, I still have a feeling that it comes down to good old fashioned experience too.

Happy hunting

No problem. Just one more thing. The Mizar M24 has been reviewed here a long time ago. It is non destructive and uses no acid. Safer for packing into your bag.

I just finished reading that manual they have on line.
They may hold 2 patents, but, I gotta say, nobody I
know EVER uses a fire assay to determine karat value
of jewelry. Instead of 150 bucks, Instead,  I'll buy
10 streak plates & the liquids, rub a spot on the plate,
and then figure out what karat it is. Simpler, non-destructive,
and definitely cheaper.  Gold in ore - fire assay
