I have found an underground root cellar behind an abandoned house.  By shining a light in I can see shelves along the walls.  This house was probably built in the 1920's.  This seems like a good place to search to me.  Any advice and search techniques?
I'll keep you informed on what I find.

Tig, number one word of advice-----BE CAREFUL.
number two word of advice-----watch where you put your hands (be mindful of spiders and other such critters)
number three word of advice-----be methodical.  I'd suggest taking a good look at the cellar and then come up with a plan of attack that includes scanning ALL of the surfaces including the floor, walls, shelves, and ceiling.
number four word of advice-----looking around the cellar, if you had something you wanted to hide from others, but wanted to be able to get to without a whole lot of trouble, where in that cellar would you put it?   Make sure you look there.
number five word of advice-----have fun (and let us know how things turn out---in general terms anyway).

Throw in a bug bomb the day before to at least get the spiders, bee's poss snakes in there dead.  Keep a small fire ext. with you in case snakes are still there.  And take someone with you!!! Some cellers also have trap doors (my grandparents did) the wood could be rotton.  Then just have fun!!! Video would be great!!! That way you can re-watch and see if you missed something.

Keep us posted.  Take care..

Hey Sharen, I hadn't thought about using a fire extinguisher on snakes before.

A fire extinguisher will not only stunn a snake, but the foam will not allow it to see.  Gives you time to get the heck out!  My grandfather always had one in the cow barn.  Every now and then a rattler would get in there.  As kids we could use on any snake but the black ones.  Works pretty good.

I'm pretty excited to hear what all would be found in the celler.  But I do hope he's carefull.

Ok, I went into the hole, being careful!  Actually I took 4 youngns with me exploring.  I think it was actually an old well. It was round, with bricked walls.  The ceiling was iron RR rails with decayed boards and dirt over them.  I found 2 old gallon size glass bottles, red plastic jug, animal droppings and a lot of dirt.  I was mistaken about the shelves, just the plain walls.  I need to go back with a shovel and the MD just to see what else I can find.
Anyone have any idea about digging in the bottom of an old well?  The ground was packed sand where the roof hadn't caved in, and seemed solid.

You might be a bit out of your depth here if the roof isn't stable. There are ways of bracing it using the same techniques that the old hard rock miners used to use or modern day construction crews. Be careful.

Why did you choose not to bring your detector and a shovel along when you went exploring? Seems like a wasted day.

I just had these 4 boys to keep entertained and they want ed to go to the 'haunted' cellar.  I was not sure what we would fing or if we could get into it.  So I considered it a scouting trip.
The video is a great idea, and I will take some pictures.
