Garrett, Bounty Hunter, White's and Minelab all make high quality metal detectors and have a long time in the industry. As others have pointed out, with today's technology, the biggest issue is your budget.

I started in this hobby with a BH LandStar and it has been a solid performer.  I got it because it has several features that I couldn't find in cheaper models (e.g., all-metal, manual ground balance).
