I was curious as to what sort of instruments people use when digging in the dirt for coins, rings etc. ?

Thanks!

I've been using a cheap, $2.99 metal garden trowel from Target. (Don't get the plastic one, had one and snapped the handle.)It's got the inches marked on it, but I don't really use the readings. Got a short round-point shovel for $6.99 at Menards(home builder supply store) for when I expand to deeper digs, after I learn the coin shooting!
The only drawback to using the metal digger, is that I've nicked more than a few coins using it.
Good luck and hope to see what you dig!

farmdigger-
Tools for digging are a personal choice... use what works for YOU.

I have seen screw drivers, dandelion pullers, trowels, and one of  the best Ive seen is a tin can with the rim cut off.... it leaves a nice, clean, sod plug to go back in the hole.

I use a plastic camping trowel I got from Sports Authority. I think it's a poop trowel  Grin It's reinforced and pretty darn tough. I went with plastic so I could use it under the coil.

big survival type knife in parks and yards-cuts sod easily and leaves a clean area when finished.beach I use a homemade scoop fashioned from a metal feed scoop-looks and works as good as the high price one from any md supply store-paid $9.00 for mine and within an hours time with a 3/8 drill bit I had one.for tougher ground a old military folding shovel with pick is handy. It just depends on soil condition and site.

Thanks for all the great ideas. I'm not positive about this but perhaps try a military surplus store for a pick???
