Don't fear the poles. Try this. Bury a ring (tied to a string so you can guarantee recovery) near a pole. Approach the pole and as you do, the machine will be swamped by the large metal object. But then, it will quiet down and if you keep it at the same distance, it will allow you to search very close to that pole and find objects that are near it. Go ahead. Give it a try. I know there will be doubters out there but until you try it, don't speak against it.

You can also see about getting a coplanar coil for your machine. They don't have as much edge sensitivity to them and allow closer searches around poles.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

What a  great idea, i will try it. Put a ring on a string. That way the ring wont get lost. Already lost some coins trying to get the hang of the new machine. I also found that some rings of mine read as foil. Going to dig everthing now. So glad i asked the question. Your the best.  Smiley

This is from a run the other day. I'm sure I was following up some one else metal detecting. I gridded an entire volley ball area digging everything, but that was easy. Only found 1 pull tab. Did the tot lot and not one coin was found out in the open. Every bit of what I found other then the trash I threw away was under the equipment.

Just get as close to the poles as you can and don't worry about next to them. Cool

If you need to get closer, try turning the coil on it's edge. bottom away from the pole of course. Will let you get closer but will cut down on depth.

Putting the coil as close as you can to make it sing.

Press the Retune if you have one will allow you to hunt the few inches under the coil.

I would just do what I could and move on. Cool

The way I test if I an picking up a pole is by lifting my defector about a foot off the ground where in know it is not picking up the ground and see how close I need top be before it starts beeping from the pole
