When you say under water do you mean diving ?? if its really quality of build and reliability , I would say Minelab Excalibur,, which is VLF and gives you discrimination, and is the best in the shallows , if you want to dig and find Iron get any other Pulse induction detector ,, which may gain you a few cmtrs in depth ,, but at least with VLF you have an option to use all metal mode,, where as with PI you have none, just buckets of iron, hope that helps...........

I`ve got garrett AT4 beach hunter, works fine in the shallows (4ft so far) and being VLF i think its better than a PI and cheaper

The good old Fisher CZ-20 / CZ-21 remains one of the best machines. If you do NOT need discrimination you could also look into an Aquapulse 1B Pulse Induction metal detector. Tesoro is not deep seeking enough in my oppinion.

If the Garrett does it for you then thats great ,not a Garrett fan my self  ,,old technology ,, I looked at there AT pro and thought it was a good concept mainly because of its water proof qualities and  allowing you to be able to detect in wet weather, but its know good as a submersible machine ,and its performance on land is the same as there Ace 250.
The Minelab Excalibur is a Sovereign in a tube and has all of its attributes, they are on the expensive this side of the pond and when they come up for sale second hand they are snapped up very quickly ,its the one to go for................Rallymaker

The Excalibur is pretty good. Only problem with it in my oppinion is that it has a lot of seals and thus a lot of possible leaks.

Sea Hunter Mark II

I have been a diver for 30 years. I also metal detect while diving. I use a Garrett Sea Hunter MKII for all my detecting. It is a PI (Pulse Inducted) machine that has two search modes. Standard modes that works well when holding the detector still, or very slow, while trying to find a target. Plus advanced mode that works well while actively looking for targets. I switch between the two all day long and it works very well. Plus I damaged mine and had to send it back for repair. The customer service with Garrett was fantastic and the detector worked flawlessly upon getting it back. For around $700 you can not go wrong. Great

I can only speak as I find ,as for seals on the Excalibur ,,if your going take it down to 200 ft then its worth having it serviced regularly  I have never dived mine , but they get some punishment in the surf , never had a problem just follow the instructions when changing batteries , you wont go wrong , with this machine you will find the goodies
Pi machines will find you iron by the bucket load,, check out the reviews.. good luck what ever choose..................Rallymaker

I too use the Sea Hunter2 and for the money.. very good in salt water diving... fully sealed and the battery compartment is separate so if it floods your MD isn't toast.
