I personally would say try to find a used garrett 150 you may can find one for that price I would avoid one that is to cheap they generally lack depth and discrimination which will frustrate a beginner. You may want to get a new one you get a warranty and could always sale it If it not for you

You could get a couple of the "entry-level" bounty hunters, but I'd look for a used Tesoro Compadre, Garret Ace 150, or Whites Coinmaster.   (and actually you could get one of those 3 new for about between $150 and $200).   The 3 I mentioned, or the intermediate grade bounty hunters, are worth the extra money.

I have the Garrett ace 150 and it's a good little machine.I have found a lot of stuff with it.3 tones and it took me a little to get use to the silver tone,it sounds like a car door open bell"ding, ding, ding"  Grin
If you can afford any new machine from the Tesoro line, well check em out.Great machines and you cant beat the life warranty.
I also have the newest machine of my line up,Tesoro silver umax and even though I have only had it out twice now it seems like it's going to be a great unit.Small, lite "2.2lbs" and very simple to use and get use too.It also loves the silver... Great
There are a few good beginner machines out there.Read some review on these units.
Now have fun in doing some research and making up your mind... Undecided

If you can come up with an extra $50 or so, and get a new detector, you'll find that it will quickly pay for itself with the change you dig up. Get the best possible detector you can afford, and you'll have a much more enjoyable time.

Bounty Hunter Tracker IV

Try the Bounty Hunter Tracker IV. It's lightweight and inexpensive. This detector automatically tracks under any soil conditions. You can also submerge the coil into the water.

I purchased one for under $100. I also purchased a coil cover which I highly recommend regardless of the model you choose. Coils are expensive to replace. Try,

store. I received the detector in good condition. I immediately placed the coil cover on the detector. I loaded the 2 Alkaline batteries and assembled the wire and the rods. It took less than 10 minutes. But, I had a Whites MXT, so I was familiar with the assembly. I sold the MXT. It was a great detector, but it was more than I needed. It's a professional, but excellent detector. I love my Tracker IV though. It fits me well. It gets the job done, believe me. I also adjusted the Tracker to fit my height. I'm not tall so I needed to adjust it to its lowest setting. I am so happy now.

You'll get good practice and then you can decide on an more expensive model.

I wish you the best.

I agree with the last post that the Tracker IV is a great starter detector for around $100.  The Tracker IV has 3 modes of operation (All Metal Mode, Full Discrimination Mode, and Tone Discrimination), it comes with adjustable sensitivity (dial) and an analog target intensity meter which ball parks the size/depth of the target.  For about $25 more you can go with the Bounty Hunter Discovery 1100.  This is an all digital metal detector and is a step up from the Tracker IV.  It has push button sensitivity and discrimination control, which I prefer over analog knobs (potentiometers).  The 1100 also has an LCD with a 3 segment target ID and digital coin depth indicator.  All solid upgrades for only ~$25 more.  Both come with a Bounty Hunter 5 year limited parts and labor warranty (which is pretty outstanding).  I would also suggest looking at the Garrett Ace 150.  Hope this helps.

Wait and save more money.  You will not get a detector that is worth a cr@p in that price range, you will get frustrated and give up.  I speak from experience...thats what I did years ago.  You get what you pay for...and the more expensive detectors are better.  I would say save up...and in the mean time you can look for a used one also and save some $$....but either an Fisher F2 or a Garrett Ace 250.  I did not like the Whites Coinmaster, did not like any of the Bounty Hunter detectors, and I bought the Fisher F2 over the Ace 250.  I run a Whites V3i and a Garrett AT Pro myself, but I bought the Fisher F2 for my son.  I have used it and for the price its a decent machine.  Unfortunetly...my son (who is 7 by the way) is just not interested in using his own detector so I'm selling it and gonna put the money toward a new waterproof PI machine.  I had high hopes of him really taking an interest in the hobby...and he does...BUT assisting me...not running his own machine.
