      Darn you guys are good.

Dmoore58, like everything else it takes time and practice and you'll probably always have a few "empty" holes (that are you'll be missing a whole lot).   And in the right area, some of those "empties" really aren't.   You'd be surprised just how small a sliver of metal you can pick up in the right conditions.   Pay attention to what kind of signal your getting versus what you are digging and pretty soon you'll be answering a newbie with your own very valid observations.   (Which by the way makes you better by reinforcing what you've learned.)

My Ace 250 was falsing a lot until I tightened up the cable. I picked up a tip from Homefire to run the cable up the shaft about 6" and secure it well then wrap it around the shaft which eliminated most of the falsing. This site is full of useful info...... Wink........Warren

When you guys use the term "gain" are you meaning sensitivity ? Haven't read anything pertaining to "gain" in any of my material about the Safari. Also, I think the best thing I can do right now is to put together a "test garden". Didn't do that initially because I don't have any actual silver. Anyone want to sell a few silver coins. I think 2 dimes 2 quarters maybe a couple 1/2 dollars a couple of $1 coins and even a couple of wheaties. I don't think I would need anymore then that. If you guys think differently let me know. Just some real silver to put in the ground at a couple different depths. Maybe 3 of each so I can bury some coins next to trash and see how the detector reacts to both a good and bad target close together. Open to input on this.

dmoore58,  I don't know about your machine but my ACE 250 and my F75 can't tell the difference between clad and silver consistantly enough to worry about. Does anyone else know more about this? gambol

I got some silver coins on ebay, back when you could bid them under spot.
Now you will pay just above spot but you can get what you want.
Just pick a seller with near 100% positive feedback and multiple sales.
The test garden is a must in my book. Helps a lot with confidence and knowing what your detector is capable of.
I buried silver to test for maximum depth compared to other coins. You won't know for sure if it's clad until you dig it.

I get the same on my Ace 250 and the Fisher F2 also. Clad normally rings around the same as silver but the wheat cents show up on the Fisher as zinc most of the time around 61-65. I think most of the time it just depends on how long the coin has been there and the angle of the coin....Warren

Learn the machine is the key, i learned how to use my XLT to the point where i can tell silver from clad, mostly by tone ID of the coin and the ID# on the machine, for example a clad dime will ID at 79-80 , a silver dime will read 81-83, and the tone has a different sound than a clad coin, like i said you have to learn what the machine is telling you it takes time but well worth the effort. Happy Huntin.....DW

Gain,sensitivity.....The higher its turned up the more power you are sending into the ground which means
more targets will be picked up with your MD.However if your over powering the unit and or the ground you will
probably get those eratic signals also known as falseing..Try to run your MD as stable as possible until you
get a good feel for it and then as I stated earlier you will be able to turn it up and you will be able to tell
the difference between falseing and good targets[ MOST OF THE TIME]
Their are other problems that go along with running power to high also but that's another story.
Try turning up your MD to were it just starts getting jumpy or unstable, once you have found this setting lower your
power to were your MD levels off and starts to run smoothly...

Give a man to much to drink his speech will begin to slurrrrrr
Give a MD to much power and its speech will begin to slurrrrr.
