I'm a little shaggy on what a pinpointer is. My perception of a pinpointer is something you move across the surface of the ground to find the location of an object more exactly than with just the coil. Where can I get a pinpointer like that and about how much will it cost?

I've moved your post to the Beginners board.
If you scan through that particular post you'll find several past discussions on pinpointers (including whether they're worth the money or just extra weight...hint, those of us who think they are extra weight seem to be in the minority).
As for price you can find very servicable pinpointer for  from $12-$15 (check Harbor Freight) on up to well over $125 for the Garret Pro-Pointer (which many of our members swear by).   And if you have any skills at all with electronics you can even make a good one yourself (plans are in the Do It Yourself board).

You have descibed the pin-pointer correctly however not only on the ground but in the hole. As stated above, Harbor freight has um for 16.99 less with coupon. You can get an idea of there different costs by typing in    "pin pointer"     on Ebay....happy hunting.

As stated above some like pin pointers and some don't.They can be useful if your having a problem finding your target within the hole your searching.Just remember that your detector is the work horse that puts you on target. The pin pointers that I know of will only pick up a target within a inch or maybe two at the most and this would work as an aid in searching a hole if you can't find the target within.
I had a Garrett pro pointer up to last month,it was a nice unit but I was taking it out with me less and less as I got more use to what my machine was telling me.I sold it on Craig's list for 90.00$,I paid 125.00$ for it new.I still have an older 580 that I will hold on to just in case....I know there is some members on here that goes with the harbor freight pointers and I have never heard any negative feedback about the functions of these pointers, plus for just 15 bucks you can check one out without breaking the bank.....  Great
