searching through the different text.  During the early months of the CoVid crisis they had a lot more items available for download (as opposed to "available to borrow"), but it is still a great source for digital copies of out of print items, including handwritten journals, on all sorts of subjects that are downloadable....The more recent items may not be because of copyright restrictions.  It is especially good for finding OLD government publications.  For instance, you can find and download .pdf versions of the ORIGINAL US Forest Service Forest Atlas (dating back to 1905).  These are nice because a lot of them are very detailed and show roads, telegraph lines, trails, and settlements that don't exist on later maps.  You can also find copies of the Journals of the Commons House of South Carolina dating back to 1692, several copies of a 2 volume 1809 history of South Carolina that covers the period fro 1670 to 1808, etc, etc, etc.

The nice thing about it is there are lots of filters you can apply in order narrow your search.   One of my favorites tactics is to sort my results by PUBLICATION DATE, with the OLDEST on top (they tend have the most overlooked clues and leads).   And even, though, you are probably going to focus on TEXT (which includes maps), it's worth checking out some of the other categories.  I have found some interesting mpg files there including old newsreels and a nice collection of films on the US mint.

And lest any of our members think this archives.org is strictly US information, it isn't.   So pick a subject and play around on the side a bit---I can almost guarantee you'll find something interesting---and probably a few overlooked leads

BA
