Just bought the above as my first detectors. I know they are dinosaurs by todays standards (but so am I  :))they were cheap enough and by all accounts were good in their day.
So the question. By todays standards are they any good. Or just toys to play with and learn a bit about detectors?

Any Detector is better then NO Detector.

Battery munchers? They are still in the big tin bird in the sky so I have not seen them yet. They take a heap of AA's? Can I use rechargables and just keep a good supply or is that to simple? Are they any good as a detector?

You could do that.      I would just buy  a block or two of the Family Dollar Story batteries..

They were the high end detectors of their era. I've found silver dimes at 11", depending on soil and mineralization etc., with my old 5D. Run the 5 in all metal mode and then check with discrimination. The newer state of the art detectors INMHO are better and go a few inches deeper, however, you will be ok with those units. Have fun!

An old detector is better than no detector but the newer motion types are a few inches deeper and LIGHTER than the diansour you bought, but if it was cheap enough you're a winner.

Don't let anybody tell you different, they are very good machines...75% of using any machine is the user. If you take the time to learn how to use them I think you will be pleasantly surprised. It all depends on how much time and effort on your part. All machines require a learning curve, so don't give up. Read the manuals, if you don't have them you can probably download them from Whites site. As I said, they are good machines, just different from the new batch of detectors. Most younger detectorists have never run one, probably don't know how effective they can be. Endeavor to Persevere!

You think you're a dinosaur?!!!  I've got a White's Coinmaster 2D that I bought in Calgary in 1985 or so.  Love it!  I've spent enough time with it that it "talks" to me and I can tell just from the sound if it's trash or treasure.  I have filled all kinds of 32 oz pickle jars with coins and jewellery.  The only thing it hasn't found is a gold nugget (guess I wasn't looking for one either).  I can get almost an entire summer on 6 AA batteries so I don't see it as a "muncher".  Good luck with your hobby.
