thank you for your response Mr: Cornelius,
of sure is not the first time but something like yours i had done before and even me i don't know yet the depth of it .thank you anyhow.
 my regards
Florin

Depth of detection is dependent upon too many factors to answer this question. Please just build it or build another machine. The size of the object, the coil size, the soil condition, the soil consistency, the soil composition, moisture, temperature, battery condition and a host of other lesser important things determine the depth. Anyone who tells you otherwise is putting you on.

As a rule of thumb, here are the detection superstars in a general format.

1. Magnetometers - inches to millions of miles.
2. Ground Penetrating Sonar - feet to 200 yards or better in water.
3. Ground Penetrating Radar - feet to yards in dry soil. Water will decrease the range to almost nothing.
4. Two Box VLF - 1 to 15 yards maximum.
5. Pulse Induction Detector - inches to 2 yards in almost any condition.
6. Induction Balance Detector - inches to 30 inches.
7. VLF/TR - inches to 26 inches.
8. BFO - inches to 20 inches.

In each of those estimates, I based the detection depth on the optimum target. For example, a magnetometer can detect an asteroid at 20 million miles or more if you focus it on the area of search. A two box unit focused on a shoe box sized object can be detected at around 15 yards and bigger objects at no greater than that distance. All others are using a 25c coin as a basic reference. Your own tests may vary so much that even this rule of thumb can be wrong.

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

If you realy want to build a discriminating BFO detector  , ask Xavier to help you . He knows all about it .  Cornelius

Hi Darkkitten

I build one too but gave it to my nephew so I did not have much time to play around with it how well is yours working? I was quite surprised at how well the one that I build worked.

Regards, Xavier

Xavier and Darkkitten    . This is such a nice detector to build . By keeping in mind that the oscillators are  4 to 1 , you can build this detector to any frequency you want . I liked this schematic when I first started out building detectors  . I must say now that it is still a wonderful design .   Cornelius

I think so too Cornelius and as i said I did not have much time to try it out so I?d like to know how DK is doing with his one and i will build one with a crystal oscillator as soon as I find the time as I think that it will make a great traveling companion.

Regards Xavier

Yes Xavier , the cristal oscillators will be the best improvement to this schematic . I never came to it ,  but if I was going to build this detector again I certainly would want a stable oscillator . This is not hard to do . If you have an idea let us know . We should share our stuff with everybody interested in this wonderful hobby . Cornelius
