Divining rod gets new life as an explosive detection device

"Seems dowsing is coming back, albeit with an unexpected angle. British company ATSC (UK) is selling an explosive detection device called the ADE 651 for between US$16,500 and US$60,000 each (depending on source). The ADE 651 . . claims that it can detect guns, ammunition, explosives and even contraband items from up to 1km through obstacles and even planes flying 5km overhead. Amazingly, it uses no power source and all the operator needs to do is hold a pair of metal rods which will point to dangerous items via "electrostatic magnetic ion attraction".

Despite being debunked by authorities and journalists, the Iraqi Government has purchased over 1,500 units and swear by them."

It's all about that moment when metal that hasn't seen the light of day for generations frees itself from the soil and presents itself to me.

Perhaps the key to successful detection lies in volume.....  Shocked

Yes, $16k seems expensive, but so is a box of cereal. You figure there is maybe 10 cent's worth of grain in a box that sells for $5.00. That comes out to fifty times mark-up. And don't forget fashion designer clothing or those imaging metal detectors. I used the example of a set of golf clubs on another forum--maybe a dollar's worth of steel in one. You can make your own mold for a few dollar each. I'm sure you can think of others. And the other alternative is communist control of the economy. Sure, a car only costs $1000, but you can't buy them because there aren't any. The government decided the factory is going to be used for military equipment. And I won't mention health care.

I am amazed at how people believe only what they want to. Does anyone here really think they would spend that much money and put so many lives at risk and never do any testing to see if it works? Your brain is warped if you do. That's why I say extreme skepticism is a psychological disorder. Sorry, but it's the truth. I also realize there are people who could never get such a device to work because they can't get past their own negativity.

Go ahead and flame me. I don't plan to read any sour posts anyway.

The only thing I was thinking is I wouldn't want to be a diviner looking for explosives no matter how good I was at it.

Everything has production costs associated with it, if there is no profit there is no incentive to build it. Plus military items have extra cost due to high durability standards which have sometimes been abused in the past. Sometimes the high cost of an item is due to the need to create a whole supply infrastructure for that item if no one is making them.

Apparently its worked to someones satisfaction, here in the US it would likely never be considered just because no one would want to take the risk of suggesting it even if it does work.

I know the US gov't has their own system for detecting terrorists and this could be the reason they shy away from the rods. I read about sensors in the carpets at airports they sense the person's footsteps how they walk. They can tell if they are nervous or what. They have those electronic billboards and they flash a picture of osama or something subliminally and then read the brainwaves of the person. Kind of creepy. Bet that system costs a hundred times more than a rod and it probably doesn't work as well when the person is aware of it like at a traffic stop. They already have these in place at a few airports.

Kind of an apples to oranges comparison but you are right, Iraq doesn't have the title for wasting money alone. A systems worth is tough to guage when talking human lives. How much is to expensive?

Lie detectors work even better apparently when the subject knows its going on. I think there are only a small percentage of people with the ability to stay absolutely calm and fool the machine. Our brains are too quick  Grin

I agree though some technology can be as scary as it is amazing. Orwell was ahead of his time....
