Go Up Go Down

I have found lots of pennies in my yard.  1 quarter, dimes & 1 nickel.  Lots of scrap.  Nails galore and a few hinges.  I did find some bird standing on top of a ball.  it looks like it may have been the top of a small container.  It is only a little more than an inch tall.  I want to go to the beach but I need a good scooper.  A guy at the beach gave me the name of a shop near me that sells them.  I am a teacher and school starts Aug. 18th.  So my days of doing what ever I want during the day are close to being over for a while anyway.   Smiley

 Teddi--                      Sounds like you are haveing fun in your own yard, keep digging out the scrap, it will help you to find deeper targets. when I find a site I want to spend some time on I will dig a lot of scrap to help clean up the area, then go to work on deeper targets, does take a lot time though. The bird you found sounds interesting, what metal is it. Yes get a sand scoop, they are great. I hunt some beaches up here and spend a lot less time bending over useing my sand scoop. Spent 4 hours today hunting, back ache made me quit, been at it 5 days straight, so time for a back break. If you get a chance to go out right after a rain, do it, makes the signals easier to get when the ground is wet. I used to water my lawn then hunt it, also helps save the grass. Am planning a trip back to florida for some beach hunting, not sure where yet, lots of places to go.

have a good one
Mel

Hello Teddi14 . Once you get the discrimation control set just right , you will detect a lot less garbage like rusty nails , hinges ...etc
Best of Luck...........Eugene

Eugene52;

I have a question about discriminate and iron.... so you get discrimination set to reject nails and bottle caps, what happens with the stainless steel coins, nickels and quarters, Canadian loonies and toonies.... they must be rejected, as well. Correct?  Idea

The best way to set discrimination is to sweep one of the nails you are finding across the search coil while slowly increasing discrimation. Once you have got it set then pass a good target across the coil and see if you get an acceptable response. This is the best way because no two machines are the same. If you do not get a good hit you will have to dig everything.

I was wondering the same thing.  I think if I discriminate too much I might miss something BIG.

Any thoughts?  I do like the going out after it rains.  I sure know I find a new nail or two in the dirt part of my driveway every time after it rains!!!

A lot of detectorists advise you not to use any discrimination at all. I am one of them. A lot can be missed because of the combination of size, composition and shape irrespective of the item and its value. Without a doubt, eliminating ring pulls will eliminate small gold and silver rings. Eliminating bottle caps and screw caps will eliminate most of the rest of them and the American 5c piece. You eliminate the small stuff well before you ever eliminate the big stuff.

It really can seem like a pain in the back to bend and dig every target but when I go out with my local detector mate here in Perth, I find 5 to 10 times the amount of goodies compared to his. Yes, I find an equal amount of trash but we both dig the same amount of time. He spends time searching and searching then digging and I dig nearly every step I take. I go home with $40.00 and a couple of pieces of jewelry and he takes home $4.00 and hopes he will find some jewelry next time.

Actually, that habit of his is in the past. He now uses no discrimination and he is doing as well as I am, bless him.

The only way to see what we (the zero discrimination crowd) are trying to tell you is to try it. Go to an area, grid off a 5 yard by 5 yard square area and hunt it with discrimination. Then, go back over it without. When you are finished, send us a picture of your smile.

GoldDigger1950;

Sounds good.

Ok, I will set up a hypothetical situation, then you can tell me what you would do.

River edge, mixed sand and boulders, plus lots of mango size and shape rocks;
Loads of black sand with fine gold everywhere, not a lot, but some;
Sand is wet, fresh water;
NO pull tabs;
NO bottle caps
The odd piece of iron from way up stream;

Give me a run-down.
