   Pretty much my take too.  I do work over surface sites when I come across them but never dug in more then a few inches.  Other then maybe a Chit house no one berried dumps in these parts .

Most are surface dumps, but many are in covered up creek beds.
Nothing is more fun than a 1880s dump!
I plan on putting in some time on Deming and Lordsberg this year. Lots of mines and ghost towns.

Worked an old dump one time that was old enough it had 12" diameter trees growing through it. Found a super 5 gal crock and after WMAO got to the bottom only to find the bottom was gone!!
