I found this bottle while metal detecting near an old foundation. It was by the outhouse, i cleaned it up and it has writing upside down on it. It says , Rochester Germicide Co. Rochester N.Y. PAT. JAN. 25 1888.
The bottle is not square, any info including value would be appreciated. Thanks for looking !!!

danwebster;

Perhaps a carbolic solution.... it is outlawed, now, for a long time, as a disinfectant, but it killed anything. Its funny, carbolic acid is an analog of salicylic acid, which, as you know is known by another form, acetyl salicylic acid. Heat pure salicylin to 300  degrees C, and it converts to carbolic acid.

jes some trivia

Nice find. I collect old bottles and have seen that one in the past. It is fairly common. Probably worth between $8-$15. Still a very nice find!

Embalming fluid.... mostly formaldehyde, a carcinogen, also in weldwood  glue. At one time, seed potatoes were washed in it to prevent fungus..... yechhhh! (Washed in formaldehyde, that is, not weldwood glue.... double yechhhh!)
