cyberborikua, you really should invest in a UV light.   Fortunately you can pick up one that will cover most of your needs at most sporting goods stores for just a few dollars.   Finding one that will handle multiple wave-lengths and is still portable is a little tougher and will set you back quite a bit more, but is still do-able.   (And a good idea if you get into flourescent rocks since many of them will change colors depending upon whether you're using a longwave or a shortwave light).
But for 90% or more of the stuff you'll want to check the cheap ones will do just fine.

BA

Actually, I will. I really liked what I read and saw about vaseline glass and feel like having a small collection of them. There is a number of objects that look like vaseline glass but they are not  Shocked. The best way to know is the UV test. Plus, like you said, the fluorescent rocks I might find as well. Thanks for the advice.

I don't think so, but saw some samples online and would love to find some of that too.  Wink

They are completely different types of glass but both highly collectable. While carnival glass was mass produced as an art glass and inexpensive at the time. Vaseline glass's glow under UV light was just a lucky bi-produced of adding uranium for color.

Some carnival glass is still produced today although in very small quantities. At the height of its popularity in the 1920s huge volumes were produced and prices were low enough for the ordinary home to afford.
Carnival glass gets its iridescent sheen from the application of metallic salts while the glass is still hot from the pressing. After that, re-firing the glass, brings out its iridescent properties.

You can get a 18in black light at Wal-mart for under 20 bucks that that works great for Vaseline glass and some mineral specimens. I have several UV lights that run on 3 aaa battery's that I carry when in the field or while shopping flea markets and garage sales you can get them off Ebay for under 10 bucks. But the cheapest way to get started is take a old wood box or display case install a regular light fixture and get a 40watt black-light bulb from walyworld. Thats how I display it at the shop and the cabinet is always a big drawing point.
OK one more hint you can get the 40watt bulbs around Halloween at big lots and the dollar store for a buck I always buy 4 or 5 as they only last 2 or 3 months at the shop.

Thank so much Seldom.  Teach The display idea I liked. I have a curio in the dining room and will open up some space for the vaseline stuff I'll get. Then I will change the reg, incandescent light for a black light for show off purposes.  Great
