South African Bottles

(1/3) > >>

Pgill:
Hi Guys,

Found these bottles at a site but do not know the companies or the age of them. I have searched the net, but I cannot even find the companies or any info on these bottles....

This first bottle is a clear glass, and the manufacturer is Thomas Minerals (Pty) Ltd, Main Road, Roodepoort. It is a Thomas Flavoured Aerated Waters drink.... it has 24 oz written on it, South Africa became decimalized in 1961.

This next bottle is brown glass and has Ohmico Ginger Beer on it.
The bottle is manufactured by Imperial Mineral Water Works, Anderson Street, Johannesburg.

If anyone has any info on these bottles, I will be greatly appreciated.....

which is a South African bottle site, but did not find anything on there. Bottles are not my strong point  ::)

The brown bottle is not old screen printing on glass is relatively new the ink dose not dry but rather hardens under a UV light also the manner of encapsulation tells us this is not old as the old bottles were closed with a glass ball and a rubber seal some had a clips type closing system that you can still find on some German beer bottles but then I too am not an expert on the subject.

All the best

Hi Xavier,

This paint on the bottle is quite thick.... But the bottles had crowns by the looks of it.... So they are not ancient, but are relatively old... Those companies also do not exist under those names anymore.....

That's right UV paint (ink) is thick in fact silk screening produces a thick layer opposed to offset printing where the print is under pressure but can be given a similar look to silk screening by applying a powder on the wet ink then placing it in an oven this is only done on expensive business cards and is time consuming but back to your bottles if I recall there was a time when quite a few new products a peered on the SA market but they were bought out by the large producers (you know who) a bit like the internet suppliers they appear then gone the next day now just take a guess who buys them out. Never know perhaps your bottles are worth something.

All the best Xavier

Thanks for the info Xavier, your help is appreciated  [great] I think you may be right about those companies being small fry's that were taken over by you know who  :o

I think these bottles are worth millions  ::) but I will swap them for two gold coins, I know...... I am really being generous  :-*

Sue:
Is Ginger Beer close to the same as Ginger Ale here in US? A non alcoholic soda beverage? Other than the antique bottle site you linked, there's sure not much popping up in a search. I did enjoy looking at the bottles in their collections tho. I like your top bottle best - I'd guess '30s - '40s vintage. Sue

Hi Sue,

Thanks for the reply and dating of the bottles  [great] there is nothing that I can find on them  >:(

Ginger beer is different to Ginger Ale, we have both here.... Ginger beer has yeast in it, so is strong flavored.....

Sue:
ah thanks on clarification - just curious because of ale & beer in the beverage names. I like old bottles, but don't go out looking for them - still, it's kind of nice to see what others find & have an idea or two - just in case :)
