Here is an old bottle I found. I think it is over 100 years old?

Does anybody recognize its shape?

Regards,

Alain

Interesting find.  Too bad it wasn't intact.

That first bottle is old and I would say hand blowen by the air bubbles in it , what they used to do is use a mould abit like  a old bullet mould only bigger sort of like a big pair of pliers  , blow the glass into it , release the bottle from the mould , the neck is still attatched to the blowpipe at this stage , snap the bottle from the blowpipe and with a second pair of pliers type mould clamp a molten piece of glass on the top of the neck to form a collar . pity the neck is broken you would have been able to see where the collar is fitted to the neck .
Over here we find a lot of tall skinny bottles some with fancy necks we couldnt work out why they always appeared around the sheep shearing sheds until it was discovered that the bottles were castor oil bottles and the shearers would oil up their shears everyday to stop them going rusty , hence plenty of bottles

Any casting (mould) marks on it?  My father in law was a bottle collector for years (he had one bottle he sold for $20,000 at an auction).  I remember him saying that most valuable bottles were blown and you could tell because blown bottle don't have mould or casting marks on them.

Rick

yes Rick
some bottles are free blowen they roll them on the marver table as they blow them to get them round , they still have to deal with the collar the same way but there are some ink bottles that they just snap off and you will see a jaggerd edge where they are broken from the blowpipe . I know of some people who used to throw the ink bottles away because they thought the ink bottles were broken and incomplete till they found- out the bottles were made that way

Hi Alain
What attracted you to the Goldmaxx  detector ? I heard they are pretty good but what is their best features , meaning what type of detecting did you buy it for ?    How would you compare it against the Explorer SE  or the ETrac? or what other named brand would be comparable to it ?

Hey THX bottle digging is lots of fun and can be very profitable. The best place to look is around old home sites just find the trash dump and start looking. Also check out were your citys old dump was. I got lucky years age when the city built some homes on the site where our old dump was dating back to the late 1800' found 100 and 100 of old bottles there was 30 or 40 of us hunting and digging for maybe 2 years till we got locked out. Also keep your eyes open for coins and other small things. If you get in to it let me know I will send you a list of good books that may be of help.
