3010/GC-1010 Metal Detector (Generic I think.  I got from Ebay)
« on: August 01, 2009, 04:36:44 pm »
Go Up Go Down

I got mine last year off of ebay.  I have no idea what kind it is.  All the manual says is:

3010/GC-1010 Metal Detector.

I got it for like $100...  It has an LCD screen & sensitivity disc/notch.  I hope I did not buy junk...

If it finds metal, how can it be junk?

As I posted in another of your queries, look here:

There is nothing wrong with your detector but according to those who have used them they are not as rugged as some of the better known brands. A few things you can do to toughen yours up is to get some RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizing) Rubber to seal the where the coil wire goes into the coil and give it more strength. That is one of the weak points on any detector. Then, use a plastic wire tie or electrical tape to secure that last bit of coil wire that goes into your coil against the detector post itself. This will keep it from snagging and also keeps it closer to the vertical keeping the wire itself from becoming an occasional false target.

Wrap your coil wire loosely around the detector shaft up to the box and that will ruggedize the coil and wire. The rest is up to you not to bang the detector or drop it too much when moving it from home to car to site and back again. Mind you, the major brands can also break but they are not quite as fragile as the cheap Chinese units. Electronically, they are amazing devices and work as well as the big boys.

You did well, you did. Now go and find metal.

Thanks so much for your words of advice.  I actually got a nice laugh about how anything that detects metal being could not be junk.  LOL

I will take your advice on the other stuff too.  I also got a pair of headphones too so I think I am ready to move beyond my yard--especially after finding this awesome forum...

I wish every new member would see your posts and heed your example of how to post here. You are gaining on the 15 post starting point without resorting to 13 messages that simply say "Nice find" or "Cool stuff." It gets tiring seeing the new folks not being conversational like your posts are.

Well done and welcome again to the forums. Now, hurry up and post a one word "Thanks" to get that next post. LoL

Hello Teddi14 . It is a Made in China "VLF" running at 6.6 Khz and is a Bounty Hunter "Clone" . The biggest problem with the Chinese Metal Detectors are the poorly made search-coils . I posted a little more for you on another thread below .

GoldDigger1950;

I think the problem with the 2 word postings is that every one THINKS  it is their responsibility to say something..... anything.... me, I just lurk! Funny

OOOps Eugenes link is missing!

You see, I THOUGHT it might be a Chinese make, but, no-knowing, me-no-saying, instead of /Hi, welcome to forum! Unnh, nice detector?/

Anybody got a Prizm?? Is IT Chinese..... oh no!  It cant be! No no!

I think some of the advising, about the coil leads, is good, so I am going to take a GOOD look at mine! Better sooner than sorry. Chinese or NOT Chinese.

Good to know that I can make a couple simple modifications ant improve any metal detector that I buy. Thanks for posting the information for Teddie14.

For those of you who have a wife that sews or who sew yourselves here is a way i found to keep the coil wire attached straight up the shaft and it is easier to remove to change coils than either cable ties or elec. tape. Take about 3 1/2" of wide elastic and sew one half of a piece of velcro to one side on one end and the other piece to the other side at the other end. Then you can stretch it and wrap it around the coil wire and shaft and fasten it together. When you want to remove the coil just pull the velcro apart. Works great and makes changes a lot quicker. Great

Rebel, that is a beauty of an idea. I have some computer wire organizers that I might give a try. Since I rarely change coils, I have a pair of fingernail clippers and a few extra wire ties in my treasure hunting travel bag but the velcro makes a lot of sense.

By the way, for those who are wondering why one should anchor their coil wire, the answer is this. Your coil wire can flop around a bit and move as you sling your coil from left to right or vice versa. As you do so, the wire can move ever so slightly giving you a false signal at the far ends of travel or if you bump your coil. It is more extreme if the coil wire lays parallel to the coil at any point. Blame the motion sensing technology for that one. It senses the tiny movements of the coil wire as a target and will drive you nuts if you do not anchor it somehow. I use wire ties. Some use tape. Velcro sounds perfect.
